Trees at Roslyn

Overlooking the north bank of the James River at the beginning of the falls above Richmond, Roslyn, which was landscaped in the 1920's as a riding park, features hundreds of trees in scores of varieties that grace the fields and paths above the river plain. Elegant planted elms, maples and lindens stand alongside naturally grown sycamores and cedars. An ancient white oak and "pillars of the sky" yellow poplars serve as reminders of the great forest that once blanketed Virginia. Some trees are young, staked and tethered; others are older than the nation.

With your help, the Trees at Roslyn program seeks to renew and preserve this valuable resource by planting and preserving trees with the generosity of sponsors. Trees may be dedicated to celebrate the life or ministry of a loved one or to honor a special event such as an ordination, birth, anniversary, or baptism. Dedication ceremonies for those honored and their sponsors are available.

Young, long-lived hardwood trees with trunks up to three inches in diameter can be sponsored for $100/inch. (As a gauge, a red maple tree with a trunk three inches in diameter is about 12-15 feet tall.) Donations to preserve specimen trees are greatly appreciated and duly remembered in Roslyn’s Memorial Tree Book. Young trees for transplanting or gifts of time or expertise are also most welcome.
